Cholla High School student council has made a positive impact on many students lives, all thanks to Mr. Parra, our student council advisor. What inspired Parra to become the student council advisor was because he loves school, the students, and he wanted to be in a work environment where everyone has spirit. Parra wanted to work with students to make this school a special and unique place. “I’ve worked at this school for over 30 years and have appreciated every second of it,” said Parra.
If students are interested in joining student council, Parra recommends you to get involved , and to participate in many school events. He also suggests to have strong leadership skills, be a risk taker, and have creativity and motivation. “All around hard workers are the key attributes for a successful student council,” said Parra.
One of the biggest challenges that the student council members have faced was not being able to do the “Burning of the C”. This was a 20 year tradition prior to the football games. Unfortunately they had to cancel the event due to district safety issues. Parra makes sure to do many events that the students will enjoy and love. “If you build something special they will come”.
Aaliyah Martinez is one of the students on the student council. She decided to join student council in order to spread the school spirit and help change the school community. Aaliyah claims that she’s gained more self confidence while being in student council. “I’ve gained more leadership than I thought I would,” said Aaliyah.
Aaliyah has recommended if you are interested in being in student council, be open minded, try to put yourself out there, and have a good work ethic. Being in student council has impacted Aaliyah’s life in many good ways. It has helped her keep her grades up in school and she gained a lot of friends. It has overall made her school experience much more enjoyable. “It helped me grow as a person,” said Aaliyah. “It’s a fun experience and it’s something people should try.”
