Breakaway is a support group at Cholla that focuses on providing help and support to break away from substance abuse or break away from a problem or situation that is affecting one’s life in a negative way. It is also a group that helps plan activities for school events and projects to spread awareness around campus. The breakaway group has been an effective way to help student’s “breakaway” from addictions and see school life in a whole new light as well as helping with their life at home. The breakaway group is run by Ms. Fragoso and by Ms. Tsosie who work towards helping students get to their goals and have fun feeling safe and not judged by the people around them.
The breakaway group at Cholla has helped many students who are or have been struggling with substances recover and find ways to cope with their mental, physical, and social health. With breakaway come many problems as it is a sensitive topic many students do not want to talk about or feel uncomfortable about. Breakaway finds a way to make all students feel safe and welcome as they express their feelings and thoughts on their mind, finding many ways to help and solve the problems with options and suggestions from other students who may have been through a similar experience. Some upcoming activities include being a part of the campus beauty project, making the school look nice and better than ever as logos are repainted and the walls now have a fresh look. Another project is an anti-littering campaign which involves putting up signs, sending out messages to try and keep the campus nice and clean, thus helping take care of Cholla while having pride in our campus.
