This year, Cholla High School welcomed a new face to the staff: Mr. Youngling, who is teaching economics and world history. I had the chance to sit down with him and learn more about his journey into teaching and his first impressions of our school.

When asked what inspired him to become a teacher, he explained that he always enjoyed school and wanted to give back. In high school, he liked learning history because it helped him understand real world history events. Economics was something he got into later when he realized how important it is in everyday life. Teaching both subjects gave him the chance to connect lessons with things students could use outside the classroom.

Before coming to Cholla, Mr. Youngling taught at Pueblo for four years and then at Amphi for three years, focusing mainly on World History. He said he has enjoyed meeting students here so far, calling Cholla a respectful community where people have already made him feel welcome.

The interview wasn’t all serious though. When I asked him to describe himself in three words, he laughed and couldn’t quite decide. Another teacher nearby ended up stepping in and called him “smart, brilliant, and hilarious,” which made everyone laugh. He also joked about how much high school has changed since he was a student and wasn’t sure he’d survive if he had to go back. Moments like that made it easy to see the humor and personality he brings to class.

Of course, every new school comes with its own challenges. Mr. Youngling admitted that the hardest part has been keeping up with all the new rules, paperwork, and expectations that come with starting fresh. But he stays positive and tries to adapt quickly while making sure his students still have fun learning.

When asked about his goals, he said he wants his students to not just succeed academically but also grow as people. He hopes to make subjects like history and economics less intimidating and more interesting, even adding humor when he can.

Overall, interviewing Mr. Youngling was a really good experience. He’s passionate about teaching, cares about his students, and is excited to be a part of Cholla.
