Mr. Wolf, one of the art teachers, took some time to answer some interview questions. Mr. Wolf has been at Cholla since 2017, and he has been teaching a total of 13 years. Mr. Wolf knew he wanted to teach when he moved back to Tucson from California “to get away from the rollercoaster that Hollywood was.” Mr. Wolf wanted to give back to others with the artistic knowledge he gained from his previous experiences.
“I’ve been creating my own art, well, since I can remember.”
Mr. Wolf’s favorite part about teaching is being able to go home and feel that he has positively contributed to somebody’s life. If Mr. Wolf could change one thing about the education system, he would change teacher pay. While the work itself is rewarding, the pay is low for what they do.
Mr. Wolf’s favorite project is the mural that is on his door in the K-pod (K-1). When students feel like they aren’t good at art and won’t try, Mr. Wolf uses a lot of positive encouragement and timely feedback while also being super welcoming and open.
When asked what is his favorite thing about art, Mr. wolf stated, “that art is effective at evoking emotions for the viewer, almost like music.” For his students he said, “for many, they haven’t seen success in art before taking the class.” Being able to witness students realize that art is more accessible and doable rather than art being an ability you’re either born with or not and that it is more of a teachable skill would be another favorite of his.
When asked what unrelated skill he wanted students to take away from his class, Mr. Wolf replied with a skill that can be used to share their imagination with other people. “There is no iPhone in someone’s head; it’s important that you’re able to share that with others,” he stated.
Mr. Wolf thinks art is important in schools and everyday life “because it is one of the few human endeavors that at the end of it you’re holding something in your hands that is yours and no one else will ever do it like you. Not in the past, present or future..”
